Survival skills 101

1. Take a 10-30 minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile. It is the ultimate anti-depressant.

2. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day. Buy a lock if you have to.

3. When you wake up in the morning complete the following statement, "My purpose is to __________ today."

4. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants.

5. Drink green tea and plenty of water. Eat blueberries, wild Alaskan Salmon, broccoli , almonds & walnuts.

6. Try to make at least three people smile each day.

7. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip, energy vampires, issues of the past, negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead, invest your energy in the positive present moment.

8. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a college kid with a maxed out charge card.

9. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

10. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

11. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

12. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

13. Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present.

14. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

15. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

16. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: 'In five years, Will this matter?'

17. Forgive everyone for everything.

18. What other people think of you is none of your business.

19. GOD heals everything.

20. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

21. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch!!!

22. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

23. Each night before you go to bed complete the following statements: I am thankful for __________. Today I accomplished _________.

24. Remember that you are too blessed to be stressed.

Cute idea I found it here, At Home With Kim Vallee.

My niece, Shelby is having her second baby. Her little guy Trey will be a big brother next month and I will be a Great Aunt, again. Actually, I am a great Aunt, not just a great-old Aunt but a great Aunt, if I do say so myself.

February is a big month for our family birthdays. Trey and cousin Kristi Ann on the 9th, Shelby and her brother Archie on the 17th and now baby Shaylee will be born on my Grandma's, her great, great grandma's birthday. I did mention to my sister, baby Shaylee and Trey's grandma (GRANDMA) that is if Shaylee decided to make an early appearance she could have the same birthday as me. What's a month? My sister, oh no, February is THE month. Just an FYI January is a great month too. Andy and Becca have matching birthdays and I'm part of triplet birthday girls, 2 of Amanda's friends Liz and Taylor. (so there Grandma Christa! just kidding, Feb is a good month too.)

Here's a glimpse at the fab, Baby shower invites I'm making for Shelby and crew.

Version 1

And yes, the shower is in January. A very good month. Version 2.

Here are the steps. Easy to do. Step 1: stamp the background of card or you use a patterned paper.

Punch or cut out a circle. Cut a piece out of the circle, looks like pac-man, or 1/4 of the pie.

Cut a solid piece of paper for the background. Mine is 3" x 4". Stitch the cut out of the circle with a zig-zag stitch to the background paper. Keep the circle with cut out close to the top of the paper. Stitch the legs of the baby buggy with a straight stitch. Start at one wheel, stitch up to center of circle on a diagonal, across the circle and down diagonally to next wheel location.

Cut a ribbon the width on background paper, add a rhinestone buckle. Tape ends on ribbon on the back of card. Hot glue the buckle in center of card. Hot glue decorated piece to stamped background card. If you want to skip the ribbon/rhinestone buckle add buttons for wheels. I saw a version of this card somewhere and would love to give them credit as the inspiration, let me know if you've seen it.

Version 3.

The inside is going to be typed on a separate paper then stitched with a zig-zag across the top. I think I will line the envelope with pink stamped paper for a little added fun.

One of my favorite, new storesin Excelsior is Petunia's. It is a great mix of vintage treasures and new finds. I have found quite a few great gifts for others (OK, a few for me too). Betty, the owner has graciously loaned Westwood a birdbath for our Christmas display.......beautiful! Stop in and take a look around this is definitely a happy place!

Upcycled Art by Mandi

Recycle, repurpose, reuse.

Don’t waste!

I won't even go into how cute and fun and really upcycled Mandi's snowboarders, snow-skiers or snowmen ornaments are. Made from fiber she makes out of plastic shopping bags, a piece of reclaimed beach ball, and filled with shredded paper. They are all hand stitched around the edge. Bright, interesting and "upcycled".

Beyond Organic

I have been running around like a chicken

with her head cut off. The photo looks a lot worse than the actual "coop" aka studio. I personally think I work better when I have a lot of things going on (obviously). Maybe not more efficiently but definitely more creatively. Today I received additional help. (no, not my mom although I have her committed for next year this time) but my first shipment of Beyond Organic Perfect Pro Meal. My friend Nancy is the founder of this company. Check out her blog fitforexcellence to learn more about her and what her products can do for you. I will keep you updated on how I am doing. I'm excited to see what it does for me.

I hope that I don't sound too much like a commercial, I am just excited to see a boast in my overall energy. Kinda scary considering the pace (I should say frantic pace) I have been working at. Reminds me of one of my favorite cards by Curly Girl. It says, " I am fairly certain that given a cape and a nice tiara, I could save the world- contribute your unique gift to the world." Love that! I will be saying, "I am fairly certain that given a Beyond Organics smoothie and a tiara (or crown) I will contribute my whimsical, unique art and handbags to the world.

Visiting Connecticut

My recent trip to Connecticut all began when Marcy mentioned to Lori that she would host a Pritz handbag party if I were to visit and attend. How fabulous is that? A party, in Connecticut that I’m invited too. I am so there! OK I was so there! Loved it. Let me back up and explain how it all happen.

Way back in late winter/early spring. (FYI late winter/early spring is really the same thing in Minnesota) Lori met Dawn; Dawn hosted a party and invited Marcy. Marcy mentioned to Lori that she would host a party if I were in town. Next thing you know it is September 24th and I am on a plane to Connecticut to visit my good friends the Obrecht’s, crash in on their lives, attend a few Pritz parties and meet some fabulous people. My visit included stopping by Seth and Nate’s school, meeting teachers, staff, friends and even their soccer coach.

The day I arrived Lori (my Pritz consultant in CT, this was the first time I met her in person...loved that!) had on our schedule a Worth clothing party to attend, Ari was having her fall launch party. If you haven’t heard of Worth pop on over and take a look. Absolutely gorgeous, unique, special pieces. The next day Janice hosted an open house and I met even more of her friends.

My last day was a busy one; bible study, work out with Lisa, walk the dogs, Marcy’s party. Back up a little to Lisa; the fitness trainer. Her company is btransformedfitness; she focuses on mind and body.

I should have been worried when Lisa walked in wearing this; nice, subtle, camo-super woman hoodie. No, really she is very nice, not too Rambo.

For every exercise she had us do she had tips on maintaining our form, why it was important and helpful to our everyday life. I’m sure I would “be” transformed by btransformedfitness if I lived in Connecticut and saw Lisa regularly. Drop Lisa an email if you are interested in meeting her or getting advise, help and encouragement on your fitness journey. This is what Lisa says,"Fitness and health is my part of my testimony, it is my ministry and my career." Love that!

Every house has needs a front door and a great door knob that looks like a vintage button that I added after the photo. I was so happy to gift two of these to my friends in CT. What fun! Can't wait to make more and tell you more about my trip out East.

Animal Glasses

Ok, by now you must know that I love animal prints. Mostly I love cheetah prints but an occasional zebra print , a one of a kind giraffe or a fun textured animal will do and I have found a great tiger print. My first love….cheetah or as we say at Pritz “old animal” . This was the very first animal that Cindy and I found that we used. Then, of course as all good things must come to an end it was discontinued. How sad, very sad because as I said I loved this print.
Kip to the rescue! (Kip is one of our seamstresses, she now lives in Arizona). She was out shopping on the web and found my very favorite “old animal”. I quickly bought up all 40 yards that they had, did I mention that I love this fabric? Ok, you get it….love, it goes with everything, is a classic, love it!

When I found these glasses I just had to have them. Loved them! Love Target for having them!

Humor to Fight the Tumor

This is Joelle's story:
"Humor to Fight the Tumor” began as a dream of mine as a brain tumor survivor. After attending a fundraiser for diabetes, I decided to start a fundraiser of my own to raise awareness and funds for brain tumor research. I was diagnosed with a non-curable and recurring brain tumor in April 2001, 8 months after giving birth to my 3rd child. At the time my two older children were 5 and 3 years old. Since 2001 I have experienced two recurrences of my tumor, one in April 2003 and the other in April 2007, resulting in a total of 3 brain surgeries. Unfortunately, a recurrence is always a possibility with the type of tumor I have, as it can never be removed completely.I can truly say that having cancer is a blessing in my life. It has made me realize that every day is a gift from God, a gift that is not to be wasted, but treasured instead. ( go hear to read the rest of Joelle's story)

There is not much more that I can say about this event than what you will read about it here. Joelle's daughter in my son’s class, they have been together since kindergarten. Joelle’s life, walk and children reflect a can do, positive, outgoing, caring, attitude. This year I have felt an even more elevated awareness and am thankful for Joelle, her vision and her kind, encouraging, support to those around her. Go! Bid! Help! (I didn’t take a photo of the one of a kind handbag I donated so you will just need to attend the event to see it and bid on it…. Go, bid, help)

Minnesota State Fair

Inspiration can hit anywhere, anytime. Here are a few photos from the state fair that may be cause for future inspiration. Usually the state fair is for trying new foods (deep fried everything), new tractors and trucks, the midway and the animals. This year it was a job for Amanda, nothing like a few hours a day (10 or so) for 12 days straight to get you ready for school. She had a great time, learned a lot and even did a t.v. spot for San Felipe!

Like I said the midway was a highlight for some. Just how many "free" things can you win? Who knew you needed 6 or more mini basketballs (each?). It was a great fair! I think this was the 2nd run of prizes....can you say allowance? gone.
We didn't try too many new foods (just fish tacos - really good and yes, David the old standard corn on the cob) and there isn't a new tractor or truck in our driveway so I feel pretty good about that.

Now for the inspiration......

Animal prints will be big for, well always with Pritz. Nothing like a little zebra inspiration....in a chicken, the feathers look good too! (Disclaimer: no live chicken will ever be injured in the name of fashion if we, esp. Amanda has anything to do with it)

I just loved the accessorizing on this horse. Can't you picture a Lizzy hanging on the saddle?
This was a must see for many....... there is a reason that those vintage fans are hanging there!

For some the grass is always greener on the other side. FYI, not true.

My personal favorite, what it must all be about, the ultimate fair accessory and I don't mean a fanny pack.

Baby Shower Road Trip

Congratulations Denise and family! Baby Gianna arrived healthy and happy and is the well loved 5th child in this special family! My friends Rachel, Paula and I had the honor of joining Denise at her baby shower in Chicago to celebrate the new little Principessa. Denise is holding a one-of-a-kind, collage complete with a crown, leopard pillow and title to go in the new nursery that my daughter created. We helped carry out the nursery colors theme with a big bag from Pritz that Denise could use as a diaper bag, we gave her "Linda". We also tucked an "Alex" shortcake into the big bag so that mom would have a cute, fun, sassy handbag to carry just for her.

Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination

What a great exhibit! If you get a chance to see Star Wars at your local science museum I highly recommend it. It's even better when you tag along behind five 13 year old boys. Cameras and cell phones were snapping pictures faster than you can say Luke Skywalker. Not only is there the great exhibit but a really cool game show..... Jedi Trials. Test your Star Wars knowledge on Technology, Habitats and By the Numbers. May the Force be with you!

Special Occasion

My newest handbag passion is for our little, special, occasion handbags. They are petite, pretty and oh so embellished. I love that they get to have all the extraordinary, adornment beyond the fabulous glass beads that are used on our other handbags. I've used ribbons, rhinestone buckles, vintage buttons, clusters of silk flowers, feathers.... the ideas are endless. So far my favorite jewel on a little handbag had been the rhinestone buckles that I found on a pair of sandals. The sandles were on clearance and I bought 3 pair to get those buckles. They are the best! I have a couple left, just waiting for the next very special handbag to be made. Maybe it will be for a special bride for her wedding? A perfect match for a homecoming dress? Or just because?

This is the beginning of a special order little handbag. I will post the completed handbag when it is all done. Can't wait!

This is what I have been working on the last couple days for my friend Beth. The magic of slip covers! Too bad you can't see the fun fabrics, we used 4 different patterns in all with trim and braid. These chairs are all pritz-ed out!
